本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛It is a very frustrating process for us to build our vocabulary.
The things I talked about are always trivial for those who have a good commanding of Engish language. If you are one of them, please forgive me. I can chattering trivialities only.
Let's take things related to cars as an example. Before I came to North Amarica, I did not know the term "hit and run". I learnt this phrase by eavesdropping other's conversations. My boss told me that "hit and run" is a felony in the USA. I do believe I have ever learnt the word "felony" as I was in China, but I it is very faint in my memory. My boss'sexplanation touched my nerve and then I really have remembered this word.
After some time, I saw a highlight in a newspaper on "run the red light". I am not too dummy so I figured out its meaning. Then, I intentionally asked some Chinese students how to say "Chuang Hong Deng" in English. Surprisingly, only 3 of 9 persons I asked could told me the right answer. I remembered this word by asking those Chinese students. If I just try to remember it, maybe I would have forgotten it.
As I tried to get my driver's license, I studied Driver's Guidebook in detail. Then, I got to know the following terms: aggressive driving, reckless driving, protective driving, ....
If we talk about the accident, definitely we should know the term "head-on". A head-on accident is terrible... Just yesterday, I learnt a term from my American teammate---He told me there was a road-block accident before his apartment.
Actually, we have a lot of opportunities to learn. The most important thing is to make things interesting. If those Engish words have not touch our nerves, it is hopeless for us to master them.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
