Yes, you are absolutely right. Actually SD & MM modules are not part of Finance function in my company.

Manager of Logistics & Director of Finance both report to CFO Canada. But I don’t really see anyone move to Finance from Logistics department.

I’m the key user of CO in Canada. To be honest, I don’t know what’s going on with SD & MM in Logistics as long as FI CO PCA & PA balance. Billing, inventory adjustment, currency differences, transfer pricing, those transactions initiated by Logistics are largely designed and controlled by Head office in Europe. Finance team in Canada does costing (gross margin & profitability analysis) using PA instead of SD or MM reporting.

Your experience and skills are still very valuable though. Working with Marketing & Sales department is especially important. They are usually the core team for business decision.

INVENTORY VARIANCE +1
      • 2.daily production report & weekly report & month end report
          • I don't. But if logistics put through wrong information, eventually would cause financial reporting problem.
            • I do costing for a manufacturing company. My understanding is that it is far beyond data entry.
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I do costing for a manufacturing company. My understanding is that it is far beyond data entry. Yes, maintaining BOM or setting up cost collector in SAP is boring. (Fortunately, we don't have many new parts. I do this once in a while and it only takes me several minutes.) Even the monthly inventory evaluation is a typical routine job. However, before you submit the entries for approval, you still need to have a quick look of the data. If there are big changes caused other than quantity fluctuation, you need to drill down and find the answer. Have you prepared any costing exercises for quoting purpose? I guess currently you are not responsible for updating or improving costing model. Depending on how complicated the system is, It takes a year or so for one to fully grasp the concepts and reasoning. After that, ---- you have to move on. Once a costing model is set up, there isn't much left for one to improve. The managers don't want the changes either especially when this will substantially lower or increase the overhead rates thus the inventory value. ABC sounds good, but, ---. You know what I mean.

I also have the feeling that costing is relatively separated from other activities in the accounting department, so it may not be a good start if your career goal is Finance Manager. On the other hand I work closely with project managers and Marketing and Sales department and prepare various analysis which do enhance the so called problem solving skills and communication skills.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

              • hi, i think we have similar job duties:costing, inventory, project accounting.. r u using SAP?do u know about CMS?
                • Yes, I use SAP but haven't heard about CMS.
All the costing, inventory evaluation including setting up OH rates, year-end material cost run are either performed in SAP or completed in Excel with the dowloaded data from SAP. I am not sure what's project costing. I set up new project numbers update activity rates, once a year, and run the project expenses/costs reports every month. I also use the report to prepare SR&ED claim. Besides that, I don't have much jobs related to projects.
                • Hi, Ramble. Glad to meet you on-line. I jsut PM you. Would you please kindly have a look. Regards.
