本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛I am not advertising Seneca's program; I am just reflecting what I have learned and experienced over the 3 years at Seneca.

Before entering Seneca, My English was terrible; I couldn't even write a single sentence without any forms of run-on and free of grammar issues. As a result, I was put into EAC149 (which is a non credit course in preparing students for EAC150). Actually, even University graduates got placed into EAC149. Even some people who were born in Canada got placed into EAC149 or EAP300 (which is lower level than EAC149). What I am trying to say is that English standard is pretty high at Seneca. And I know some of these people. I’m also aware of that most new immigrants got placed into EAP200 (which is a lower level than EAP300). Anyway, I do not want to scare you away from Seneca.

EAC150 is the actual Basic English course that is required for all students in diploma programs. If you do the Accounting and Finance (ACF) program through day time, you will encounter EAC150, EAC349 and EAC694.

EAC349 (formerly EAC394) is a basic effective business writing course. All students under the Faculty of Business must take this course.

EAC694 emphasizes on advanced report writing for Accountants and reflect issues that actually occur in the “real world”. This course is case based, with selected cases from Ivey school of Business at University of Western Ontario. The contents include but are not limited to professional application of financial accounting concepts, ethical issues and business analysis. Only ACF students in the day program need to take this course. Almost every week you need to submit a case study; usually consists of 7-10 pages. Some students even wrote 15 pages or more per case. However, there are no page limitations, you can write as little or as much as you want; however, in order to get a decent mark, usually 7 pages is required. This course is taught by 2 professors at the same time (1 accounting teacher and 1 English teacher).

Almost all courses in the ACF program require students to perform minimum of one 20-minute (on average) presentation and a minimum of one group assignment. Some courses even have 5 group presentations depending on the teacher. This program also integrates ethics in most of the professional courses. If you don’t get these requirements, it’s mainly because your teachers do not like presentations. Then you are very lucky, because group assignments and presentations are very annoying. Why, because not all your group members are good students. When you are presenting, you will be nervous. However, the end result is amazing; I actually enjoyed doing presentations during my final semester because I got used to perform these presentations. The nervousness was with me from semesters 1 to 5 completely disappeared.

And I have made many new friends. Oh, please be advised that most students in semesters 1-4 are not that bright and hard working. If you want to make friends, semesters 5 and 6 are your best bets. People I know from semesters 1-4 are either lazy & failed OR couldn’t make it to semester 5 due to other factors. All the group assignments I experienced in semesters 1-4 were unpleasant because students at this level are very lazy.

The above comments are just my personal opinions and suggestions. You may experience different things depending on your luck, temptations and the way your mind works.

College?
    • If I were you, I will go Humber有Fast track的会计文凭 first. Use the dipolma to find an accounting entry level job. And then decide if you want to go CGA or CMA, depending on your interests and English level. Only my opinions. Good luck ^_^
      • Thank you for your advice! Very helpful.
          • Great point.
。。western的ivey。。waterloo。。brock的会计。。。。 。。
    • Hmm Can you show me the link to Humber's 1 year Accounting program?
      • Seneca focus on more soft skills. Many group assignments and presentations integrated into all Seneca programs.

      • yea, It's really good news. I got diploma over 10 years ago in accounting program in China. Would you please tell me If I can transfer credit at here and can enroll fast-track program? Please give me an answer If somebody knows. I'd appreciate it.
      • agreed
      • As long as female, good English, tons of entry jobs.
But A/R, A/P, bookkeeping, no fun, even OK pay.
      • Male acccountants are very difficult to find a job in Canada, especially for new immig
        • I don't think so. stop focus on entry level jobs, and you will find something for sure.
