a bit of my expirience to share

本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛My son started in SK last week. From day one, he has been great based on the communication book. I went to school and met his teacher, and she told me that he is a great kid. The school autism team lead told me the he is so good this school year, and compare to last year; it's like night and day. He made a friend on the first day. When I peaked though window during lunch time, my heart was smiling because I have never seen him so cool and so calm.
As parents, we felt big improvement within last month and half. He is calmer and more reasonable.

He was diagnosed with autism in Jan, 2009. We were told he is very bright. He is not old text book autism, which means he will not be diagnosed if back 10, 15 years. None of people think he is autism or any different except they think he is spoiled. It took a while for me to accept the truth.
I am not going to go to detail to describe him, or tell what we tried before which did not help. What I would like to share is what we done lately that might help him.

1, Starting July, we put him on ABA therapy. The therapist did not think he need a lot of hours, so he was programmed for six hours per week mainly focus on behaviour. The therapist told us we have to change some of our parenting style because he was totally controlling and manipulating us. We were underestimated him. We have to take back the control.
2, His new naturopath doctor prescribed liquid B6 with magnesium, liquid B complex, liquid B12.
3, He is older, so he is able to control his emotion better.

We don’t know what the main reason is, nor do we care. We are just happy that he is progressing. As parents, we have to know “This world needs different mind”.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net

    • Thanks a lot for sharing.
    • Mislabelled child?
      • For a long time, I thought he is mislabled. Now, I accepted who he is.
If he is "normal", he may not be as smart as he is now. That is what his therapy told us. We are lucky to have him. We know so much about Asperger and the spectrum all because of him. He is so similar as the "normal" five year old, but he is different in many ways. I hope all parents look for help for your kids as early as possible if you do feel your kids are different. Who don't have a label?
    • One more thing I would like to add is: Teacher is essential to your kid's development
Specially at young age. Trust your intuition as a parent, if you feel the school or teacher is not good for your kid, change it. Especially for young kids who can’t articulate well yet. Good teacher makes your kid wants to go to school, wants to share, communicate, and be a good kid. The right teacher is going to make big difference on your kid because they do care. This is my true experience.
      • Absolutely. I totally agree with you.
    • 又进步了
We did heavy mental test last month, and fund out that arsenic is really high in his body. naturopathy doctor put him on a very safe heavy mental detox remedy. In the beginning, he showed a bit regression on emotional control. After couple weeks, he is doing much better.
Few occasions he was really upset, but he did not get angry or throw tantrum. Once, he had tears in his eyes, but he was able to control it.
At school yard, he is able to talk to his friends in a very calm way. At that moment, LG felt he is a perfect normal five year old boy.

Other suggestion is to cut down process food as much as possible. We switched to fruit sugar and sea salt. Try to buy food with nature sugar and salt.

Correction: He was diagnosed in Jan, 2010
      • Where to buy fruit sugar and which brand?
        • I buy them from Bulk Barn. A lot of grocery stores should carry sea salt and cana sugar, like loblaws.
          • Good to know. Thanks for sharing.
          • Kitten, can you please check your PM when you get a chance? I would like to seek your advice/help regarding helping my ASD-suspected son. Thanks, Lydia.
    • Geneva centre for Autism international Symposium
昨天参加了Geneva centre for Autism international Symposium。 上午的keynote speakers, 不太有兴趣。 下午,我选的session by Dr. Tony Attwood was beneficial.
      一个半小时他讲了很多,记住了一点点:
      For kids with asperger:
      • Don’t use punishment, use logic
      • One to two hours of CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) per week is required for the benefit of the kids
      • Cat is the autistic dog
      • …..
我还有幸得看见Dr. Temple Grandin who did not have speech at young ago. Now she is a high functioning autistic and a multimillionaire.
She said never take away your kids talent and interest away as punishment.
    • Mid term school interview
I just got back from school for midterm parents and teacher interview.
His SK teacher told me they have no concerns with him, and he is doing really good job this year. He is very social, friends with four other boys. He is very independent in all his works, but need to remind him to slow down a bit. His reading level is 10 (level 6 for SK), and without comprehension, teacher can rate him with level 16. The special need teacher told me he is really going to go far in his life because he is very smart. Keep doing what I am doing with him now. She is helping to put an IEP for him next year, and it will benefit him.
If you have a 星星的孩子,don’t worry, don’t deny. Work with them and love them, they will be OK. They come to your life for a reason
      • really happy for you! best wishes to you and your kitty
