The S&P/TSX Composite Index was down 276.63 to CLOSE at 13005.09.
The S&P/TSX 60 Index was down 16.62 to CLOSE at 763.48.
Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 153.54 to CLOSE at 11740.15.
NASDAQ Composite Index was down 43.15 to CLOSE at 2169.34.
Volume on the Toronto Stock Exchange was approximately 331 million shares. There were 401 issues that advanced, 1161 issues that declined, and 218 issues remain unchanged.
Foreign markets were mostly lower today
London's FTSE 100 Index was down 70.80 to close at 5629.10
France's CAC 40 Index was down 51.97 to close at 4566.99
Germany's DAX Index was down 65.91 to close at 6448.08
Japan's market down 250.67 to close at 12532.13
Hong Kong's market was up 203.72 to close at 22705.05
In commodity markets:
Gold fell $2.20 to $972.00.
Silver fell $0.47 to $19.79.
Copper fell $0.13 to $3.80.
The current contract for crude oil rose $2.75 to $107.90 per barrel.
Canadian stocks fell sharply led by raw-material producers as commodity prices slid on concern U.S. demand may weaken. Also weighing on metal prices was copper after news that imports to China declined. Financial shares added further pressure on the market as investors remain concerned that banks' earnings may be hurt by credit market problems.
Canadian bonds closed higher on a flight to quality and the Canadian dollar fell with commodity prices.
The yield on the 30-year bond is currently at 4.03%.
The Canadian dollar is currently at $1.00 U.S. dollars.
In Specific Issues:
BCE Inc., Canada's largest phone company, rose the most in almost a year after a Quebec court dismissed a lawsuit that threatened to derail its C$52 billion leveraged buyout. Bondholders had sought to stop the buyout, stating it was unfair and had led to a decline in the value of their C$1.7 billion in investments. The bondholders have until March 17 to appeal.
