    Marieta (Mazurca)
A mi querdisimo amigo D. Santiago Gisbert

Francisco de Asís Tárrega y Eixea (21 November 1852 – 15 December 1909) was a Spanish composer and classical guitarist of the Romantic period. He is known for such pieces as Recuerdos de la Alhambra. He is often called "the father of classical guitar" and is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

A Mazurka is a polish dance form resembling the polka, frequently adopted as a ballet form. It is written in triple time 3/4 or 3/8 time with the second beat heavily accented. Mazurka is a style of dancing that originated among ordinary people and not in the royal courts.

Francisco Tárrega composed many pieces that were musical portraits of his sons/daughters or close friends and often dedicated many of such works to his friends/pupils or patrons.

Marieta is the nickname that the Tárrega family used for their daughter María Rosalía (born on 13 September 1885 in Barcelona). The piece was dedicated to his dear friend Santiago Gisbert.

This sad piece is selected as one of RCM (The Royal Conservatory of Music) grade 8 repertoire.
