  • 工作学习 / 外语学习 / How they named universities? XYZ University, or University of XYZ? +4

    My observation:

If XYZ is a place, e.g. a city or a province, then it would be University of XYZ. e.g. University of Alberta, University of Waterloo, etc.

Otherwise, it would be XYZ University. e.g. Carleton University, Western University, Queen's University.

    • 👍
    • Exception: Boston University
    • Peking University
      • National Taipei University
        校區位於新北市三峽區,自1949年起歷經行政專校、中興法商最後在2000年改制為綜合大學。
        • Obviously the way does not apply to those in non English countries. 😁. Probably only within Canada
          • Is York in York University a place name or a person's name?
            • none, when the university was founded.
    • In United States there are State universities like Michigan State University, and then there's a University of Michigan. +1
    • Princeton University
    • In the United States, +2
most public universities first established and funded by a state government are named University of XYZ, e.g, University of California, University of Michigan. Some states established more colleges later. Those colleges are usually called XYZ State University, e.g, California State University, Michigan State University, etc

Private colleges are usually named after their founders, like Stanford, Brown, etc.
    • In the Nicolas Cage movie "

Lord of War". The African warlord says, "it's bath of blood". And Nicolas Cage tries to correct him, "It's not bath of blood, it is bloodbath". The warlord also says, "you know they call me the lord of war". And Nicolas Cage is like, "It's not lord of war. it is warlord".

The rule is kind of reversed when it comes to naming the universities. It is usually like "The university of XXX", with few exceptions. The list goes on and on.

      University of Chicago

      University of British Columbia

      University of Alberta

      University of Waterloo

      University of Melbourne

      • The script writer of the movie intentionally picked those portmanteau words to make fun of the dictator. It's not the general rule at all.
    • NYU
    • Remember there are many institutes of technology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, etc. +1
      and Tokyo Institute of Technology
