    Bank of Canada deputy governor Pierre Duguay addresses the Canadian Association for Business Economics on “The Bank's Research Agenda and the Future of Inflation Targeting,” Kingston, Ont.

    The National Association of Realtors reports on U.S. existing home sales for July. Economists anticipate a 0.9-per-cent drop from the previous month to annualized sales of 5.7 million homes.

    Tundra Semiconductor reports. Analysts expect first-quarter (2008) share profit of 12 cents, up from 10 cents in the year-ago period.

    Tuesday, Aug. 28

    Bank of Montreal reports. Analysts expect third-quarter share profit of $1.38, up from $1.30.

    Bank of Nova Scotia reports. Third-quarter share profit of $1 is expected, up from 88 cents.

    Magna International shareholders vote on a proposal to sell a $1.5-billion stake (U.S.) in the auto parts giant to Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska.

    Statistics Canada releases a study on long-term productivity growth (1961-2006) in Canada and the U.S.

    The Conference Board reports on U.S. consumer confidence for August. Economists expect the confidence index to fall to 104.3 from 112.6.

    The Federal Reserve issues minutes from its Federal Open Market Committee meeting of Aug. 7.

    Wednesday, Aug. 29

    Bombardier reports. Analysts expect second-quarter share profit of 4 cents, up from 3 cents.

    DaimlerChrysler issues second-quarter interim report. Second-quarter share profit of $1.74 (U.S.) is expected, down from $2.22.

    March Networks reports. First-quarter (2008) share profit of 2 cents is expected, down from 16 cents.

    Thursday, Aug. 30

    CIBC reports. Third-quarter share profit of $1.94 is expected, up from $1.70.

    National Bank of Canada reports. Third-quarter share profit of $1.35 is expected, up from $1.25.

    Corby Distilleries reports fourth-quarter results.

    Dell reports. Second-quarter (2008) share profit of 30 cents (U.S.) is expected, up from 22 cents.

    Diageo reports preliminary 2007 results.

    Freddie Mac reports. Second-quarter share profit of $1.19 (U.S.) is expected, down from $1.93.

    Inbev reports. Second-quarter share profit of 76 euro cents ($1.09) is expected, up from 65 euro cents.

    Mosaid Technologies reports. First-quarter (2008) share profit of 43 cents is forecast, down from 58 cents.

    Open Text reports. Fourth-quarter share profit of 41 cents is expected, up from 35 cents.

    Statistics Canada reports on the balance of international payments for the second quarter. Economists expect a current account surplus of $8-billion, up from $6.5-billion in the first quarter.

    Statscan releases July industrial product and raw materials price indexes. The price index for industrial products is forecast to have fallen 0.5 per cent from June; the raw materials index to have risen 0.7 per cent.

    The U.S. Department of Commerce releases preliminary GDP figures for the second quarter. Economists forecast an annualized gain of 4.1 per cent.

    The U.S. Department of Labour releases initial jobless claims for the week ended Aug. 25. Economists expect 320,000 claims, down from 322,000 the previous week.

    Friday, Aug. 31

    Statistics Canada releases annualized GDP data for the second quarter and June GDP data by industry. Economists expect annualized quarterly GDP growth of 2.8 per cent and a June gain of 0.1 per cent.

    The Department of Commerce releases personal income and consumption data for July. Economists expect incomes to have risen 0.3 per cent while personal spending is to have grown 0.4 per cent.
