Filberg Park

Goose Spit

Goose Spit

Filberg Park

The Filberg Lodge and nine acres of beautifully landscaped grounds are located on the harbour near the end of Comox Avenue. The estate was originally built for R.J. Filberg in 1929, and became a public facility after his death in 1977. The Heritage Filberg Lodge and and Park Association (a non-profit society) manages and develops the property on behalf of the municipality.

The rustic Filberg Lodge is a reflection of the skills of local craftsmen in the use of stone and timber. The original stonework was done by stone mason and head gardener William Meier. The Lodge’s warm interior complements the outside appearance with extensive hand-made woodwork and stonework.

The Gardens are a myriad of exotic and local trees and flowers. A wonderful place for a peaceful stroll or an afternoon picnic.

The Totem Pole was created by Richard Krenz and donated by Gordon and Ivy Wagner. The totem pole features the crests of the four main families of the Comox native people.

The Hands on Farm, operated by the Town of Comox during the summer months, houses various farm animals. Each year the Filberg Festival is held in Comox to provide a four day forum for hundreds of artists and performers to display their work and entertain.

The festival is held each year in early August. For this years dates visit the Filberg website. Some of Canada’s leading artists will be attending the festival to display their artwork and demonstrate their crafts.

For more information about this years festival, including bio’s of the featured artists, or the Filberg Estate in general, please visit the Filberg Heritage Lodge and Park Association web site, or contact the Coordinator.

Goose Spit Park

Located a short distance from the Town of Comox, Goose Spit is a unique landform that partially encloses Comox Bay. A little over two kilometres long, the area is comprised of a sand, cobble and rock beach fed by glacial till and sand from the Willemar Bluffs. The beach and bluffs are part of a dynamic erosion and deposition system that changes the landscape over time. Goose Spit is a popular place to view Bald Eagles, gulls, loons and a variety of winter water birds. Brant Geese visit the area in the spring as they migrate north. Many people, especially families, enjoy walking below the bluffs and exploring the tidal pools farther on at low tide. The spit is home to rare species of plants such as black knotweed and rare insects such as the sand-verbena moth.

    Below Info from Wickpedia

Comox is a town of about 15,000 people on the southern coast of the Comox Peninsula in the Georgia Strait on the eastern coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The warm dry summers, mild winters, fertile soil and abundant sea life attracted First Nations thousands of years ago, who called the area kw'umuxws (Kwak'wala, the adopted language of the K'omoks, for plentiful). When the area was opened for settlement in the mid-19th century, it quickly attracted farmers, a lumber industry and a fishing industry. For over fifty years, the village remained isolated from the outside world other than by ship until roads and a railway were built into the area during the First World War. The installation of an air force base near the village during the Second World War brought new prosperity to the area, and in recent years, Comox has become a popular tourist attraction due to its good fishing, local wildlife, year-round golf and proximity to the Mount Washington ski area, the Forbidden Plateau, and Strathcona Provincial Park. The town is also home to a Royal Canadian Air Force base CFB Comox, an airport for military and commercial airline use and the Sea Cadet training facility HMCS Quadra. The mild climate has attracted many retirees to the area in the 21st century, resulting in a high rate of growth and a sharp increase in the median age of residents.

Comox town is in the Comox Valley, along with several other communities, including Courtenay, Cumberland, and the unincorporated hamlets of Royston, Union Bay, Fanny Bay, Black Creek and Merville. The nearby Comox Glacier is visible from many parts of the town and is the area's signature landmark.
