You're right. Companies may have different ways regarding working overtime. Usually an employee needs to let the manager know or receive approval before OT.

      I wouldn’t put this in writing unless it’s required, just talk to the manager.

       

      On a side note, normally, this should have been agreed on before the OT (not after the fact), it all depends on your company culture/policy and of course your manager’s style.
