    Humans are pillaging the planet

Re: “Salmon collapse hitting workers hard,” Sept. 11.

The fact that overfishing is never mentioned in this kind of story is bizarre and tiresome.

The “suicidal” behaviour and mindset of the fishing industry has been well documented for decades worldwide, for centuries in some areas.

A changing global ocean and climate, and widespread habitat degradation, are certainly not helping at this point.

The fact that humans are super predators pillaging the planet blindly is best illustrated by what we do to fish in general and the activities of the fishing industry in particular.

    2,

    Paying $3,000 for speculation tax

My wife and I have owned a condo in Sidney for many years. We are Canadians and our two-bedroom Sidney condo is our vacation home where we spend various periods of time, up to six months per year.

We have paid $3,000 for the speculation and vacancy tax for 2019.

We may sell our condo and rent a two-bedroom condo in the Sidney area for about $2,000 per month for six months or so.

I am told that our condo would sell for about $700,000.

How does this transaction help with the affordable housing situation?

Interestingly, I'm able to see the correlation between these two letters.

    • I couldn’t see it. :(
      • Let me explain: Vacant housing is a way of pillaging the Earth
本文发表在 rolia.net 枫下论坛The first letter claims that humans are pillaging the Earth, and the evidence is overfishing.

I think the evidence is not strong. Humans do catch lots of fish. But generally we eat all what we caught. We do not leave the fish aside and let them turn bad.

The second letter provides a stronger evidence. Housing takes away a great amount of resources. It's not only the living rooms and bedrooms, but also a lot of supporting facilities and infrastructure, like water system, power grid, sewage, gas pipeline, roads, etc. Every one of these requires taking away something from the Mother Earth.

Although it's understandable that everyone needs housing, occupying more housing than one uses is questionable. If someone owns a housing unit that he seldom uses, another housing unit has to be built to accommodate the need of someone else. The result? Humans have to take away more resources from the Mother Earth to build more houses, some of which would be left empty, for long or for short.

In my humble opinion, that's a good example of pillaging the Earth.更多精彩文章及讨论,请光临枫下论坛 rolia.net
        • Good point!
        • I think overfishing means human catches all the fishes in the nearby ocean,
there is no fish left. I knew a lady from Newfoundland, she said no fish to catch in her hometown now, because fishing company use the net that can clean the bottom of the ocean.
