It's definitely a master piece. I enjoyed it in quite a few different forms: 越剧,民乐合奏,小提琴协奏曲,and 芭蕾舞剧。

Agree. I got a friend who plays violin. He once had such comment: the butterfly lovers concerto (化蝶) is beautiful not so much because the composers got extraordinary talent. They derived the melody from the traditional Shaoxing opera (越剧),

which was so beautiful to begin with. His comment may not be entirely fair (from the composers' point of view), but in a way he expressed what you mean here :)
Somehow making sense. BTW, Traditionally Chinese music only had 5 notes, i.e. 12356. But Butterfly Lover already went beyond such tradition. It used the "7" as well.

Sure thing. That's violin concerto, which already goes beyond the scope of "traditional Chinese music", so there is no reason for the composers to limit themselves within the 5-note system :-)
